The Golden Call from Emirates

Man am I excited!!

I received my "Golden Call" from Emirates on Wednesday, 29th of August at 13:25

I am currently a member on the forum "cabincrew.com" and found a girl there that is from Australia. She received her Golden Call also on the 29th, just around after 1pm. I was happy for her, but then I thought to myself, I wish I was the one who could tell the world that I have received the call.

I thought I wouldn't receive the call that day because her online status changed to "You will be contacted by your Recruitment coordinator at the earliest" a day before mine changed. So I thought maybe Emirates would call me the next day. I went on about my day, still checking my phone like every 15 minutes, just in case I was missing out on anything :P

I had just sat down for lunch at my work, took a sip of my coffee and then the next moment my phone rang. I was completely shocked, as I looked down onto my phone and saw the "foreign number"

I answered the call immediately and sure thing, it was my Recruitment coordinator, finally! It was about time as I had been waiting for 6 days already!!

I could hardly make out anything she was saying, but I was just too excited to care. I just made sure I listened and focused on what she said. It was really hard to understand her English as her accent was so different!

My date of Joining is 16 November. That is the date that I will fly from OR Tambo International - Johannesburg.

What I now need to focus on, is getting through all my medicals. I am starting today. Going to begin with the cervical smear test, then later on going to the dentist for a check-up and then hopefully I can get an appointment to do the Chest X-ray today as well as well as all my Blood tests. The sooner I can upload this on my portal, the sooner I will know if I get "Final Approval" Status.

I will post a blog later on exactly what medical tests are required to take etc.
I received my Formal Contract of Employment as well (yesterday at 13:25) exactly 24 hours after I received my GC.

I have to say that they are really well organized!
Well, let me get the busy day started!

Emirates Final Interview

My final Interview experience:

My final interview was on the 8th of July with Emirates Airlines. It was on a Sunday and it was difficult for me as I had my stepmother's birthday lunch on that day, and my family wanted me to be there. I decided to go to the lunch, knowing that I could probably only stay for a short while as I didn't want to put extra stress on myself with regards to being late for my interview.

I ended up staying just an hour, but I am glad I left early because grooming takes quite some time, as you can imagine that I wanted to really look my best for the interview.

I arrived on time, ended up having the Russian lady interview me. The interview didn't last much longer than 30 minutes. They interview you on your past and current work experiences.
So, nothing to worry about. If you passed the Assessment day, then Final Interview isn't nearly as intense and stressful.

I was glad once it was over and done with. And then the "wonder, and wait" begun.
The lady told me that it could take anything between 6 weeks and 3 months before I would know my faith.

Tips for if you have your final interview with Emirates:

  • Make sure you have your passport photos - in colour and make sure you have 4 - 6.
  • Ensure that your formal photo is correct - as mine wasn't and I ended up having to retake my photos. Get your formal photo done by a professional photographer. Good posture, facing the camera, legs next to each other, feet next to each other, make sure not to cross your legs. Arms must be next to your sides.
  • Wear court shoes (no strappy shoes)
  • make sure your hair is tied back and neat.
  • Wear the famous red lipstick.
  • and most important: give a biiiig smile, showing off your teeth!

Assessment Day

So, the lovely Assessment day was held at Protea Hotel in Sandton, on 7 July 2012.

It was a very long day! We were about 79 girls which were invited for the Assessment day, which was conducted by 2 Emirates Recruiters.
(one blonde from Russia and the other one was brunette from Lebanon)

We were all divided into groups of 12-15.

The day started off by watching videos about Emirates and then the two ladies gave us some basic info about Emirates Airline and also about Dubai.
While I was sitting there, I looked around me and thought by myself: how in the world am I going to make it through to the next round, let alone the whole day. There were many pretty girls and you know that Emirates will only select the very best.

But, then I was in for a big surprise as the day continued :)

The next step after the information hour was that they would call each group separately and then we would be called one by one to introduce ourselves to the recruiter and then we would have to do the arm reach test.
You need to be able to reach 212cm (allowed to stand on your toes but with no shoes on)
After the arm reach test, you sit down and the lady will ask you a few basic questions about yourself. I was asked: "What do you like to do in your spare time" and they also ask about tattoos and scars.
So it's just to try get to know who you are...

After she saw the whole group, the lady would come stand outside of the circle and you would have to stand up, introduce yourself to the group and then you have to introduce the person on your left and also tell the group about the person's favourite holiday destination.
After each one has had the chance to talk, you wait 2 minutes and then they tell you to stand up and then as you walk out, you get handed a little folded letter - when you open it, it would tell you if you made it through to the next assessment round.
Nothing felt better than opening that small piece of paper and saw that I made it through to the next elimination round!!!

Then you wait, sometimes up to more than an hour... and then the group gets called back in for the next round. The second round was team work - we were given a scenario and then had to decide amongst the group what we would do in that specific situation. Here they basically check everyone to see whether or not you will be able to work well in a group.
Try to not be bossy, or talk too much, as they do NOT like that. The one girl in our group was trying to take the lead and was talking above everyone else, and she was eliminated. She obviously had a lot of confidence (which isn't a bad thing, as they do look for that in a person), however, you should never have too much confidence.

Then, the third round was an English test (if your first language is not English) - about an hour long... not bad at all, it's very basic English. Then they mark the tests and then you get called back in and that's when we were told that all of us made it through to the Final Interview, which would be conducted the next day. By then, it was 8pm at night, and we were all very tired as the day begun at 8:30am
We were a total of 22 girls who made it through to Final Interview. So here I was, one girl out of a total of 450 girls (total at the beginning of the Open Day which was held on the 30th of June) who made it though to Final Interview. It was such a great moment and a personal achievement for me! My family and friends were so proud of me as was the love of my life :)

The Journey has begun

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

I have always wanted to become a flight attendant, since I was a young girl. Growing up, I would always be fascinated with planes and to see all these amazing-looking women gracing the airports, each one proud of the airline she is representing.

But then as you start growing up, you start to like other things in life and soon you have new dreams and aspirations. However, I could never forget about my true dream, what I am destined to be - a Flight Attendant.

Now, if you are anything like me, you like the finer things in life. You strive to be the best at whatever life throws at you. I wanted to become a flight attendant, and at the age of 25 - my dream might just finally come true!

I don't want to fly just for "any" airline, I want to fly for the best: EMIRATES!!
